My brother got way drunker way earlier than I did. People told me it was my metabolism, that I simply didn’t process alcohol efficiently or whatever. That was why it took me ages to get drunk, but it was the very same thing that helped me keep off the weight. Other girls always told me that I was lucky. I always told them that I had to spend roughly three times as much whenever I went to a club or a bar. Then again, I’d won more than a few bets out-drinking guys at the dorms, and so earned that money back.

I guess I was pretty lucky. I leaned deeper into the sofa, my mind wandering to thoughts of Gary. He was a good looking guy. I laughed. I didn’t know if it was the alcohol talking or what. Maybe I was drunker than I thought I was, but damn if I couldn’t keep noticing that he was really attractive. It’s not like I didn’t know, and it’s not like I had never noticed before, but it was particularly pronounced tonight.

It was probably was the alcohol, I thought to myself, making another vodka orange. I had noticed him looking at me, too. As he had gotten become more inebriated, his eyes had wandered over my body with increasing courage.

“Are you making another drink?” I heard him call from his room. He came out, topless, and I had to actually try not to gasp. I mean, I’d seen him before just after his work out, but I didn’t feel the way I did now earlier in the day.

“Yeah,” I said, play-acting like I’d been caught in the act. “Come on. Can’t I?”

“You can,” he said, giving me an exaggerated nod. “But seriously, don’t drink all my vodka. That shit is good stuff. It’s expensive.”

“I thought you were crashing?”

“I need to shower first. I’m all sticky.”

“Okay,” I murmured, watching her brother go into the bathroom. She heard the metal pipes groan, and then heard the roar of hissing water. Gary had a really strong shower. It was like getting a massage. It was one of the reasons I liked coming around.

But my mind quickly returned to the way he looked. I couldn’t figure out why I was so fixated on it. Truth be told, I did sort of like him, and had a huge crush on him when I was younger, but that was all gone now. I mean, he’s my brother. Yeah, not my real brother, but he may as well be. I couldn’t remember a time in my life when he wasn’t there.

“Pull it together,” I whispered to myself. I went to the window and looked out. It was kind of late, but there were still lots of people walking about on the street. The city never sleeps, I thought.

Still I found my thoughts going back to Gary. It was one of those moments where I simply couldn’t stop the momentum of my mind. I was probably drunk, definitely altered,
